Electrolytes are everywhere right now.
Powders, tablets, colorful drinks, hydration packets... It can sometimes feel like plain water is no longer enough.
But is that actually true?
The short answer is: not necessarily.
Electrolytes are incredibly important, but that doesn't automatically mean everyone needs an electrolyte drink every single day.
Your body is actually very good at regulating water and minerals on its own. What changes the picture is how much you sweat, how active you are, how hot your environment is, what you eat, and how much fluid you're losing.
So instead of asking, “Should I drink electrolytes every day?” a better question might be:
“Did I lose enough fluid and electrolytes today that I actually need to replace more than just water?”
Let's break it down.
1. First, What Are Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in your body fluids.
That may sound very scientific, but they're involved in very everyday things: maintaining fluid balance, supporting nerve signals, helping muscles contract and keeping many normal cellular processes running.
Some of the main electrolytes you hear about are:

And here's an important point:
Electrolytes don't only come from electrolyte drinks.
If you're eating regular meals with a varied diet, you're already getting electrolytes throughout the day.
2. Your Body Is Already Working on Hydration All Day
One of the most interesting things in the research is just how tightly controlled fluid balance actually is.
Your body doesn't simply wait for you to drink something and hope for the best.
Your brain, kidneys, hormones and thirst response are constantly communicating with each other to keep water and electrolyte concentrations within a relatively narrow range. The review describes two especially important systems: arginine vasopressin (AVP), which helps regulate how much water the kidneys retain, and the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), which plays a major role in sodium and fluid regulation.
Your kidneys are doing a huge amount of this work.
The review notes that sodium and water are filtered by the kidneys and then largely reabsorbed, with hormonal systems helping determine how much you retain and how much you excrete. Potassium balance is also largely regulated through the kidneys.
In simple terms:
Your body is constantly adjusting.
When you lose water, your body works to conserve more of it and your thirst usually increases. When you take in more than you need, the system shifts in the other direction.
So hydration isn't just about pouring more liquid into your body.
It's about balance.
3. So… Do You Need Electrolytes Every Day?
For many people on an ordinary day?
Probably not from a special electrolyte drink.
Imagine you work indoors, eat regular meals, take a short walk, maybe do a light workout and don't sweat very much.
You are losing some water and electrolytes throughout the day, of course — we all are — but your normal food and fluid intake will generally contribute to replacing them.
Now compare that with someone who:
- spends hours outside in hot weather,
- does a long or intense workout,
- sweats heavily,
- exercises more than once in the same day,
- or has a particularly high personal sweat rate.
That's a different situation.
The more fluid you're losing through sweat, the more relevant electrolyte replacement can become.
The review highlights that exercise and heat can increase both sweat losses and other water losses, creating a stronger physiological challenge to fluid balance.
So there isn't really one hydration rule that fits everybody.

The key word here is context.
Electrolytes aren't automatically “better hydration.” They're one tool for situations where your fluid and mineral losses are higher.
4. Sweat Changes the Conversation
Sweat isn't just water.
It also contains electrolytes, particularly sodium.
That's why spending the whole afternoon walking around California in the heat isn't physiologically the same thing as spending that afternoon working on your laptop in an air-conditioned room.
And people also sweat differently.
Some people barely notice sweat after a workout, while someone else can finish the exact same session completely soaked.
Your environment, exercise intensity, duration, training status and individual physiology all influence what you lose.
This is one reason hydration needs can be much more personal than social media sometimes makes them look.
5. More Electrolytes — or More Water — Isn't Always Better
This is probably one of the most important parts of the conversation.
We usually talk about hydration as though more is always better.
It isn't.
In endurance exercise, drinking excessive amounts of fluid while losing sodium can contribute to exercise-associated hyponatremia, where blood sodium becomes abnormally diluted.
The review discusses excessive water intake and sodium loss through sweating as factors that can contribute to this problem. It also notes that smaller body mass may make excessive fluid loads more significant for some individuals.
This doesn't mean you should be afraid of drinking water.
It means hydration should be about replacing what you actually need, rather than forcing enormous amounts of fluid because you saw a hydration goal online.
Your body needs enough water.
Not an unlimited amount of water.
6. And What About Women? Does Your Menstrual Cycle Change Hydration Needs?
This is where the research gets particularly interesting.
Oestrogen and progesterone appear to interact with systems that regulate thirst, sodium and water balance.
For example, the review found evidence that oestrogen can shift the threshold at which AVP is released, while progesterone may influence aldosterone, a hormone involved in sodium regulation.
That sounds like menstrual cycle phases should dramatically change hydration needs.
But here's the interesting part:
In practice, the differences seem much smaller than you might expect.
Across the studies reviewed, hormonal fluctuations generally did not produce consistent major changes in:
- whole-body water retention,
- plasma volume during exercise,
- sweat rate,
- electrolyte losses,
- or post-exercise rehydration.
There was one particularly interesting difference.
During the mid-luteal phase, when progesterone is higher, resting core temperature may be approximately 0.5°C higher. During phases where oestrogen is dominant, the body appears to favor heat dissipation more strongly.
But even with these temperature changes, studies haven't consistently found that women lose significantly more sweat or become more dehydrated simply because they're in a particular menstrual-cycle phase.
So the takeaway isn't:
“You need extra electrolytes during this exact phase of your cycle.”
It's more:
Pay attention to how your own body responds.
Because the researchers also emphasize that hormone levels vary considerably between women. Individual differences may matter more than applying one universal cycle-based hydration rule.
7. Feeling Bloated Doesn't Necessarily Mean You're “Holding Too Much Water”
Here's another interesting detail from the paper.
Many women report feeling more bloated or noticing greater fluid retention around their period.
That's a very real experience.
But when researchers studied perceived fluid retention, the timing didn't neatly match the expected peaks in oestrogen or progesterone.
In one observational study discussed in the review, perceived fluid retention actually peaked around the first day of menstruation, and researchers didn't find a clear relationship between oestrogen or progesterone concentrations and self-reported fluid retention.
In other words:
Hormones probably play some role in how we experience these changes, but the relationship isn't as simple as:
high hormone = more water retention.
The body is more complicated than that.
8. What Should You Actually Do?
Instead of automatically adding an electrolyte packet to every bottle, think about what your day actually looks like.
On a regular day
Start with water and regular meals.
Keep a bottle nearby and drink consistently rather than suddenly trying to catch up at night.
On a hot day
Pay more attention to your fluid intake, especially if you're spending several hours outside and sweating.
After a light workout
Water and your next normal meal may be all you need.
After a long, sweaty workout
This is where replacing both fluid and electrolytes starts to make more sense.
If you're training regularly
Start noticing your own patterns.
Do you sweat heavily? Are your clothes covered in salt marks after training? Are you exercising outdoors in the heat? Are you doing multiple sessions?
Your hydration strategy should match your actual losses, not someone else's TikTok routine.
9. A Quick Hydration Check
Before reaching for electrolytes, ask yourself:
Did I exercise for a long time?
Was it particularly hot today?
Did I sweat a lot?
Am I doing another workout later?
Have I also been eating normally today?
If most of those answers are “no,” you probably don't need to turn every bottle of water into a sports drink.
If several answers are “yes,” electrolyte replacement becomes much more relevant.
The Bottom Line
Electrolytes matter.
But needing electrolytes and needing an electrolyte drink are two different things.
Your body already has sophisticated systems for controlling water, sodium and potassium balance, and much of what you need comes from regular food and fluids.
There are times when an electrolyte drink makes a lot of sense — particularly with prolonged exercise, significant sweating and hot environments.
There are also plenty of ordinary days when plain water is perfectly fine.
So rather than following a rigid hydration rule, build a routine that changes with your day.
Some days that might mean cold water in your SIPLUSH.
Other days it might mean adding your favorite electrolyte mix after a long, sweaty workout.
Hydration doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to make sense for what your body is actually doing.
